New potential methods for monitoring IBD have been discovered through research on tissue samples – the latest scientific article review by the BIOMEDICA CRO team 🔬
A recent study conducted by Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute, King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has identified a specific type of immune cell that is crucial in safeguarding cells within the human gut and is reduced in individuals with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs).
The researchers collected colon tissue from patients treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust – including 34 healthy controls, 42 uninflamed samples from IBD patients, 27 inflamed samples from IBD patients and 7 from IBD patients for whom samples of both inflamed and uninflamed tissue were collected. Intriguingly, they found that Vg4 T cells were significantly altered and often depleted in the inflamed IBD samples.
Now, scientists plan to investigate how γδ T cells interact with epithelial cells to uncover potential drug targets. They also aim to enhance methods for monitoring gut γδ T cells, which could lead to a valuable marker for distinguishing between Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn`s Disease (CD) progression and recovery.

Order FFPE blocks, fresh frozen tissue and biofluid samples at BIOMEDICA CRO to conduct Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research 🩸🧪
At BIOMEDICA CRO, we do biosample procurement through a broad network of partnered hospitals in Ukraine and supply them globally. We provide both prospective and retrospective collections of the numerous human biospecimen types and associated clinical data since 2017.
We manage our own network of 50+ direct contracts with hospitals in Ukraine in many disease areas and are always ready to make a new one if necessary. Due to access to many departments, we also take part and contribute to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research. For instance, we can provide the following biospecimen types from subjects with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease:
- FFPE blocks with inflamed and uninflamed tissue specimens;
- Inflamed and uninflamed fresh frozen tissue specimens;
- Whole blood, plasma, buffy coat, serum, PBMC;
- Saliva;
- Urine;
- Stool, etc.
Also, please note that we can obtain different biospecimen types from 1 donor. For example, it can be a matched case containing tissue specimens (FFPE blocks + fresh frozen tissue) and biofluids (plasma, buffy coat and serum).
By collecting specimens by ourselves, we ensure easy, fast and faultless communication with the executors. BIOMEDICA CRO team is in constant contact with clinical sites as well as primary investigators (physicians) and is always ready to provide you with the latest collection feedback. Direct contact with physicians ensures their proper understanding of collection details and the high quality of collected biospecimens.
All human biospecimens we provide are collected according to our internal SOPs and your specific recommendations. Our experienced study managers ensure that all project steps are tailored to your unique needs.
If you need a reliable partner to source FFPE blocks, fresh frozen tissue and biofluid samples for your research, BIOMEDICA CRO is here to help!
