Stool specimens characterization via novel smartphone application – a review of the latest innovations in Gastroenterology by BIOMEDICA CRO.
An innovative mobile phone application was found to be as good as expert gastroenterologists at characterizing stool, according to a study by Cedars-Sinai.
Stool reporting by patients, usually guided by the Bristol Stool Scale, is crucial to helping physicians evaluate symptoms for diagnosis or for judging the effectiveness of medications. The artificial intelligence (AI) used in the smartphone app also outperformed reports by patients describing their stool specimens.
“The artificial intelligence tool removes the subjective description that can be part of a patient’s description of their bowel specimens. In addition to improving a physician’s ability to assess their patients’ digestive health, this app could be advantageous for clinical trials by reducing the variability of stool outcome measures,” said Ali Rezaie, MD, co-author of the study and the medical director of GI Motility at Cedars-Sinai.

BIOMEDICA CRO team is proud to participate in preclinical trials, drug discovery, development of new laboratory devices, technologies and other scientific projects.
We collect various human biospecimens, including stool, from diseased and normal donors since 2017. There is a good network of contracted clinical sites in different disease areas and we are ready to make new connections if necessary.
BIOMEDICA CRO is open for the new requests with sample processing protocols that will work the best way for your investigations.
Despite Russian aggression, our team continues to work as usual. We would be happy to answer all of your questions and provide you with more information.
