The research project examined 18 Psoriasis patients and 15 healthy controls, none of whom had a prior diagnosis of gastrointestinal conditions. Samples were collected from both the small and large intestines, with researchers analyzing immune cells in the mucous membranes.
“It turned out that Psoriasis sufferers had higher numbers of certain immune cells in their small intestine, which showed signs of pro-inflammatory activity,” the researchers stated. Notably, the same types of immune cells were identified during skin flare-ups in psoriasis patients, suggesting a possible interplay between skin and gut inflammation.
These results confirm the importance of conducting further research to explore better connections, develop preventive medicine, and improve overall well-being.
