Researchers developed ‘normalized nerve density’ metric to assess Oral tumors better – the latest scientific article review by the BIOMEDICA CRO team
A new metric has been identified by researchers at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center and the School of Dentistry to express the correlation between nerve density and oral cancer.
The research group created a standardized metric for nerve density to clarify the variation in the distribution of nerves in the oral cavity, called normalized nerve density and showed its importance in tumor progression. Most of the work was done with human tissue, and the team then validated the findings using a mouse model.
“We showed that tumors with high normalized nerve density seem to be associated with poor survival for patients with tongue cancer, which is the most common type of oral cancer,” D’Silva explained. “We also found that patients with high normalized nerve density and a smaller distance between the nerve and the tumor have poorer outcomes.”

Order biospecimens at BIOMEDICA CRO and discover the worth of high-quality biospecimens and clinical data
At BIOMEDICA CRO, we do biosample procurement through a broad network of partnered hospitals in Ukraine and supply them globally. We provide both prospective and retrospective collections of the numerous human biospecimen types and associated clinical data since 2017.
We manage our own network of 50+ direct contracts with public hospitals in Ukraine in many disease areas and are always ready to make a new one if necessary. Our main area is oncology studies, so Oral cancer biospecimens collection is an easy task for us. Moreover, we can recruit healthy subjects or patients presenting with non-cancerous conditions, such as oral cavity trauma, dental plaque, gingivitis, periodontitis, etc., as a control group for the cancer cohort.
Also, we can involve subjects with other cancers in our research projects:
- Breast cancer;
- Kidney cancer;
- Lung cancer;
- Prostate cancer;
- Thyroid cancer;
- Endometrial cancer, etc.
In general, it is feasible to collect up to 40-50 ml of whole blood from each donor and process it into plasma/ buffy coat/ serum/ PBMC, up to 100 ml of urine, 1-5 ml of saliva, tumor/NAT tissue specimens in FFPE blocks or frozen tissue samples, etc. All human biospecimens we provide are collected under the internal company SOPs, as well as with your particular recommendations.
BIOMEDICA CRO team ensures easy, fast, and error-free communication with our customers by collecting specimens ourselves. We are in constant contact with clinical sites as well as primary investigators (physicians) and are always ready to provide you with the latest collection feedback. Direct contact with physicians ensures their proper understanding of collection details and the high quality of collected biospecimens.
We are proud to participate in preclinical trials, in-vitro diagnostics and drug discovery. Our professional team will be more than happy to cooperate once you need an additional supplier of biospecimens for your research!
